The electric great white shark

By | August 29th, 2012|Tour Happening's|

The Great white shark is one of the world's largest predator and one of the ways that makes the great white shark to be effective hunters are their electromagnetic sensors located throughout the body. In addition to their sight and smell, Great whites, like all other sharks, have an extra sense given by the Ampullae of Lorenzini, which enables them to detect the electromagnetic field emitted by the movement of living animals. Every time a living creature moves it generates an electrical field and great whites are so sensitive they can detect half a billionth of a volt. This is equivalent to detecting a flashlight battery from 1,600 kilometres (1,000 miles) away. Thus, while a great white's sense of sight is useful, the shark does not depend on it. A shark primarily uses its extra senses (i.e, electrosense and mechanosense) to locate prey from far off. Then, the shark uses smell and [...]

Back at Seal Island

By | August 23rd, 2012|Tour Happening's|

Dawn breaks over Seal Island False Bay The first day back at sea after a number of days of foul weather always makes me at bit nervous. Will the sharks still be there? Yesterday we were back at Seal Island after a stretch of wild Cape Town weather and I was excited and anxious to see what the shark activity would be like. The morning AIRJAWS trip started with a gorgeous red sunrise and clear skies; a welcomed sight after a week of rain. Predation activity was slow so we anchored up to prepare for the cage diving. A full boat of guests waited with expectation as we put out our baits and the decoy. After a few brief sightings we finally got a wonderful player shark around the boat. This beautiful 2.5 meter shark was light grey and had distinctive tufts of parasites on its dorsal fin. [...]

Watching AIRJAWS from above

By | August 23rd, 2012|Tour Happening's|

We have a very nice viewing platform for our guests to experience watching the great white sharks around the boat, as well as watching the breaching and predation events on our AIRJAWS trips. We offer our guests poncho's to wear as it can be very chilly in the early morning on the water in False Bay. Looks like these guests are having a good time!

Great White Sharks love the new decoy

By | August 23rd, 2012|Tour Happening's|

Hello Shark Lovers. Well today’s post I have decided to tell you a little bit about our Decoy “Unlucky”! Now I have you thinking why we called it “Unlucky” here is the story behind our best friend. We mentioned in a recent post that we had just completed a BBC documentary called Earth Flight 3D, now that production crew had 3 fantastic decoys made, very professionally made. The decoy has eyes, a tongue, and flippers. It is made of soft foam, very important so it does not damage the sharks teeth when he bites it. Boy did they work like a absolute dream. During the 8 days that we worked with the BBC, we had about 16 breaches, sometimes up to 7 in one day. The decoy was working like a dream. Rob and the crew were quite keen to see if we could keep one and tried our best [...]

Great Shark Diving Experience

By | August 17th, 2012|Tour Happening's|

Great Experience”[pullquote]My husband and I had a great time with Rob and his crew.[/pullquote] Reviewed August 14, 2012 My husband and I had a great time with Rob and his crew. Everyone was very friendly. We started our morning off with a gorgeous sunset and a great white breeching out of the water! We didn't see a breech the rest of the day, but we did see 5 more sharks. The only thing I did not like is that when we went in the cage, we were given no instructions on where to put our hands or feet. Other than that we had a great time and it was amazing to see these graceful creatures up close! After experience diving with the sharks it makes Shark Week all the more exciting! Visited June 2012

We recently did a very successful film shoot with John Downer Productions, for the BBC. Here is a lovely pic of the boat with the rig and the camera crew using 3D camera which was used to film the great white sharks and birds around Seal Island. Blue Pointer 2 with filming Rig

“One of a Kind”[pullquote]an amazing experience[/pullquote] Reviewed May 31, 2012 This was an amazing experience. It was not only the sharks that made the trip extraordinary but the excitement of the crew that made this a 'one of a kind' experience. The expertise of captain Rob as well as the crews' passion to give the customer the best time possible makes this charter unbeatable. It would be a shame to use anyone else for a shark dive. An Experience of a Lifetime

By | August 14th, 2012|Tour Happening's|

“An Experience of a Lifetime 23/07/2012”[pullquote]professional, friendly and fun crew[/pullquote] Reviewed July 25, 2012 THANK YOU to Rob and his team for such an unbelievable experience. We were so lucky to have fantastic weather (after a particularly gloomy weekend!), amazing shark sightings and such a professional, friendly and fun crew to take us out as well as a very friendly and patient Tamsyn doing desk duty! I still can't believe how beautiful these creatures are - I now have sharks constantly on the mind and ready to do it again at any chance! It is also a great idea to be connected to air so that we didn’t have to break our viewing time by surfacing for air all the time. Definitely a highlight of my trip to Cape Town and something I would highly recommend to anyone visiting this part of the world. See you next time! Janet Visited [...]
