Summer Great White Shark Awareness In Cape Town

By | October 29th, 2012|Tour Happening's|

With summer on its way and the Great White Sharks moving closer inshore, our shark cage diving season in False Bay has officially come to an end, and African Shark Eco-Charters thought it would be a good idea to remind everyone to keep safe in the water and to obey the Shark Spotter's Flag Warning System. Considering the number of people who use the ocean on a daily basis, the actual number of attacks by Great White Sharks is extremely low. People are not the natural prey of the Great White Sharks. Everyone entering the ocean should do so at their own discretion, knowing that they are entering a wild environment in which sharks naturally live. We are entering their territory; they are not coming into ours. Shark Safety Tips If people exercise caution and are aware of their environment, the risk of an attack can be lowered further. Tagged Great White Shark Killed Off Mozambique

By | October 25th, 2012|Tour Happening's|

A Great White Shark named Brenda Fassie, who was tagged in Mossel Bay around 7 months ago, made its way along the coast up to Mozambique where she was caught in a gill net and died. The online Ocearch Global Shark Tracker showed that Brenda's satellite tag had been transmitting signals from a village in southern Mozambique for a period of nearly two weeks. At the end of last month, based on dots showing where signal was transmitted from, Brenda swam around the Mozambique Channel. On October 4, she was near the shoreline and a line from this point shows her tag was moved to an area near the village of Quissico in the Inhambane area of Mozambique. A number of dots plotted in the village show how her tag has moved around daily. When zoomed in on, the map shows that at 5.53am on Wednesday, the tag transmitted a [...]

Shark Cage Diving & Breaching 2012 Season Highlights Howzit Sharkies. I trust you have all had a great time this past season enjoying our blogs, and im sure some of you had great times with us on our shark cage diving and breaching trips. It has been a mixed up season with some lengthy gaps of no sharks. Here is run down on how I saw the season for 2012: Our shark cage diving trips commenced this year in February,  and since I have been with African Shark Eco Charters, we have never missed a day in Feb for the past 3 seasons with regards to sightings. We had a great month with great white shark numbers varying from 1 all the way up to 8 or 9 on some trips. The scavenging normally happens at this time of the year as the seal pups are starting to venture away [...]

Shark Cage Diving “Once in a lifetime!”

By | October 7th, 2012|Tour Happening's|

Shark Cage Diving “Once in a lifetime!” I recently did the Air Jaws tour in mid-September with my boyfriend and another couple. Prior to booking the trip, I received lots of helpful information about the tour and what could realistically be expected from it. I felt very confident booking with the company that NatGeo and Discovery Channel use, regardless of what the shark sighting outcome would be. Thankfully we were not disappointed!! The morning of the trip we met the company at the main docks and hopped on board. The owner of the company, Rob, was our captain that day and throughout the morning he told us about his company’s history, interesting stories, and lots of information on great whites. Rob is very knowledgeable and friendly, as well as his helpful staff. On the way to Seal Island we witnessed a poor seal become a shark’s breakfast. Once we got [...]

Shark cage diving- a “Wonderful Experience!”

By | October 6th, 2012|Tour Happening's|

Shark Cage Diving- a “Wonderful Experience!” Our Boat " Blue Pointer 2" This trip was truly an epic experience. From the time I booked the trip to stepping off the boat at the end, everything was handled very professionally and efficiently by the staff of this family-owned business. Booking the trip by email went smoothly and I was given options on payment which was very nice. They explained that even though I had to put a credit card on file, I could pay cash at the end to save the 3% added to non-cash transactions. So I was able to plan that part ahead of time. I chose to book the optional round trip transportation from my hotel and our driver was on time, very nice, and the drive to Simon's Town was pretty quick (about 45 minutes). Once we arrived, we all boarded and headed out immediately [...]

Ali’s in love with the great white sharks of False Bay

By | October 4th, 2012|Tour Happening's|

Great White Fascination Leaving Simons Town harbour on the way shark cage diving. Seal Island False Bay My first season with African Shark Eco Charters has been a whirlwind of dramatic hunting sequences, teeth, claws, flying sharks, chewed decoys and excited tourists.  The 2012 great white shark season has been action packed and I have loved and appreciated every moment of it. Last week on the Blue Pointer 2 a guest told me she was surprised to find that the crew members were as thrilled as the tourists were about seeing great white sharks.  She couldn’t believe we were so enthusiastic when we see the sharks every day... surely we get used to it and it gets old??  I can honestly say that the excitement never wears off. No matter how many times I have seen these unique predators, every day is different and extraordinary. What’s important to [...]

Shark Cage Diving “SHARK!!!!”

By | October 3rd, 2012|Tour Happening's|

Shark Cage Diving “SHARK!!!!” This tour was beyond my expectations. My wife and I took the morning Shark Trip our first day in South Africa. We saw about 10 different great whites that came right up to the boat (and next to the cage). We were also lucky enough to see a kill and a breach on our decoy. The team from African Shark Eco-Charters was extremely professional and knowledgable and I felt completely safe (well as safe as can be when you are face to face with a 12 ft great white) with them as our guides. I highly reccommed anyone to use this company if they want to use see great whites in action.
