The ‘Flying’ AIRJAWS Great White’s of Seal Island

By | July 31st, 2013|Tour Happening's|

The Unique ‘Flying’ AIRJAWS Great White Sharks of Seal Island   We have had incredible activity the past few weeks at Seal Island in False Bay. The great white sharks have been giving our tourists quite the show. We may make you wake up and get out of bed very early in the morning (and on vacation too!) but I hope it’s worth it to see our famous ‘flying’ sharks hunting seals with a vengeance. Seal Island is the only place in the world where great white sharks consistently jump out of the water as part of their hunting strategy; the unique topography of the island is the most significant contributing factor to this behaviour. The island’s underwater topography goes from being a few meters deep just off shore to dropping dramatically to 18-25 meters almost immediately. The great whites use this deep water around the island to patrol for [...]

Filming with African Shark Eco-Charters

By | July 30th, 2013|Tour Happening's|

Filming with African Shark Eco-Charters by Rachel Lacombe   Wow!! My husband and I just got back from an epic shoot filming with African Shark Eco Charters for the forthcoming documentary Great White Shark Legend. The footage we captured is INcredible! It was such a privilege to get to spend so much time out on the water with Rob and his amazing team. They all looked after us so well! Ali is so knowledgeable about so many predators, it was fascinating hearing her stories. Gary's enthusiasm was ridiculously contagious making every trip so much fun! And Wellie really knew how to work those baits, expertly enticing sharks and alerting us as to where to point our cameras. Together with Rob's expertise in all things sea and shark this is one fab team to go in search of such an awesome predator with! We also got to meet some amazing people from [...]

Shark Diving – “Excellent – everything I hoped for”

By | July 26th, 2013|Tour Happening's|

Shark Diving - “Excellent - everything I hoped for”   “Excellent - everything I hoped for” I had high expectations, and still my expectations were exceeded! The breaching is hit-or-miss whether you actually see sharks flying through the air, but the excitement of the chase is still a lot of fun. Then being in the cage as the 13ft shark swims past is just unreal! As for specific companies, ASEC is top-notch. The team was helpful and responsive starting from my first inquiry, many questions, and even after I returned home. The crew is a lot of fun and takes great care of you on the water. I also really liked having the oxygen to be able to stay underwater my whole 30 minutes in the cage, which I think is unique to ASEC. Overall this is an excellent, highly recommended company and bucket-list experience! Visited June 2013 “Amazing time” [...]

Shark Diving – “The ONLY way to go!”

By | July 26th, 2013|Tour Happening's|

Natural predation of a Great White Shark on a Cape Fur Seal Shark Diving - “The ONLY way to go!”   “The ONLY way to go!” We were one of two shark cage diving boats out at Seal Island today (July 12) and I am SO glad we went again with ASEC (we had gone once before in off-season and didn't get in the cage due to lack of shark activity). After a beautiful pre-dawn ride out to the island, Captain Rob and his crew got busy looking for predations. We saw several hits and some misses (yay for the seals that got away!). Once we'd seen a few of them as well as gotten a little tour and information about the island, it was time to get in the cage. The other boat crammed 4 people in their cage (ASEC only puts 2 people in at a [...]

Shark Diving – “Exceeds expectations in every way!”

By | July 26th, 2013|Tour Happening's|

Shark Diving - “Exceeds expectations in every way!” "We had an absolutely incredible tour with African Shark Eco Charters last month! Upon arriving in Simon's Town, we were promptly greeted by a crew member and shown to the boat. After a short boat ride, we were at world famous Seal Island, where we saw multiple sharks breaching and hunting seals. It was amazing! The crew was very knowledgable and professional and were able to answer an questions we had. After watching the sharks hunt, we had the opportunity to get in the cage with them. They provide clean, dry wetsuits and only put two people in the cage at a time. You can also choose to snorkel or use a scuba regulator attached to oxygen on the boat. Many companies claim that noise from the scuba gear disturbs the sharks, but this definitely did not seem to be [...]

Shark diving with GoPro

By | July 11th, 2013|Tour Happening's|

Shark diving with GoPro So July is here and it started off with some very strong winds, forcing us to cancel a lot of our shark cage diving trips to Seal Island. With saying that... never fear, the Great Whites are still here. The other day the weather man got it all wrong, predicting winds that didn't seem to come through till the afternoon. With a big scramble the African Shark Eco Charters team managed to phone our guests and get one of our Great White shark cage diving trips under way. Leaving the harbour only at 10:50am, it was a bit of a late start but that didn't stop us from getting three or four different Great White Sharks to the boat. One of them was a Great White that has been coming to our boat everyday we have been at sea for over a week now. We've named [...]

Its not just sharks, it’s Humpback Whales too!

By | July 2nd, 2013|Tour Happening's|

Hello fellow great white shark lovers! It’s really kicking off with activity here in False Bay, and not just with sharks! This past week we have seen the first whales of the season, with our guests getting the special chance to view humpback whales on two separate occasions. This is the time of year we will start seeing not only Humpback whales but Southern Right whales as well. These whales come up from the southern oceans to calve and escape the frigid Antarctic winter. It’s always such an added bonus to a shark diving trip to run into one of these peaceful giants on the way home from Seal Island! Our very enthusiastic guests and crew had an exciting trip this morning. To start the trip, our decoy seal nicknamed ‘floppy’ met a fitting end in the mouth of a great white shark. An approximately 3.5 meter shark breached this [...]

Familiar faces on our great white shark trips

By | July 2nd, 2013|Tour Happening's|

Familiar Faces on our great white shark trips. I know our blogging has been a bit on the slow side, but we have been so busy on our great white shark trips that we have scarcely had a chance to sit down and blog. So, forgive us, but here is a great one for you! So June has just gone and it hasn't failed to provide us with some amazing predation activity and breaches. There also hasn't been a shortage of great whites around the boat either. There's been plenty happy faces on our great white shark trips, both in the shark cage and on the boat which makes us here at African Shark Eco Charters very happy. There has been a large increase in the number of sharks around the island (Seal Island, False Bay)in the past week or two. We guestimate there to be around 15-20 at the [...]
