Great White Shark Cage Diving in Cape Town South Africa

Cape Town, South Africa is quite the tourist destination for those in Africa as well as other countries. The mixture of cultures, sand, sun and fun makes Cape Town very enjoyable. While in Cape Town there are a host of different water sports to take advantage of. Snorkeling, scuba diving, deep sea fishing, surfing, and kite surfing are all different water attractions in South Africa that you can take advantage of. If you are looking for more than your usual adventure there is one other sport you might like to try. The sport is shark cage diving. Cage diving with sharks is a magnificent experience that only the bravest of tourists have attempted in the past.

It is true there is a lot of fear when it comes to sharks. They are massive creatures, which are largely understood. The shark is not as intelligent as a human, in fact they work off of instincts hunting for food and testing out what they do not know. As the largest predator of the ocean Great White Sharks are feared the most. Other sharks like Hammer Head shark, Tiger Shark, Goblin Shark, and the Whale Shark are feared, but not like the Great White. The Great White is depicted in movies as a fearsome predator, and Jaws certainly didn’t help reduce the fears.

However, you cannot base any shark cage diving experience on these perpetuators of fears called the movies. A real shark diving experience with a cage will differ, and we will explain how that is.

Dive with Sharks

A shark cage diving experience starts out at sunrise. The certified boat will leave the docks of Cape Town and head towards Gansbaai. Gansbaai is known for a dense population of all types of sharks. We mentioned some of the sharks you can expect to see above, such as the Whale Shark. The Whale Shark is actually the most docile shark because it eats plankton, rather than meat. It is the largest shark in the ocean. Once the boat reaches Gansbaai and sharks are spotted, a cage is lowered into the water. Now on the way to the location, chum has been laid out behind the boat to attract the sharks. As soon as the chum waters clear and the cage is lowered, it is time for the divers to get into the cage, one or two divers at a time.

There is still fish hanging in the water to attract the sharks, but this is away from the cages, allowing instead for the sharks to swim by the cage and head towards the food, rather than bump or ram the cage. This gives you a chance to view sharks in their natural habitat and learn more about their size, their power, and how they behave. A shark cage diving experience is really a lot about studying these magnificent creatures from the protection of a cage like scientists do. The next time you are in Cape Town, consider the shark cage diving experience. You might see Goblin Sharks or Tiger Sharks.

If you are interested in Sharks then you should really consider a Great White Shark Cage Diving Tour.
