I know our blogging has been a bit on the slow side, but we have been so busy on our great white shark trips that we have scarcely had a chance to sit down and blog. So, forgive us, but here is a great one for you!
So June has just gone and it hasn’t failed to provide us with some amazing predation activity and breaches. There also hasn’t been a shortage of great whites around the boat either.
There’s been plenty happy faces on our great white shark trips, both in the shark cage and on the boat which makes us here at African Shark Eco Charters very happy.
There has been a large increase in the number of sharks around the island (Seal Island, False Bay)in the past week or two. We guestimate there to be around 15-20 at the moment. We have even managed on our great white shark trips to get two great whites that are regulars at Seal Island around this time of the year. One is a rather large female shark known as Amber who we estimate is around 4.3m/13ft. She has been coming back to Seal Island for the past 6 years now and the other shark is also a female we put in at around 3.5m/10.5ft. Her name is Duex Rossi and she’s been returning for 3 years now.
How do we know its them you ask? Well that’s a good question, and I am glad you asked! We have many different ways in which we distinguish the difference between one shark and another. The three main ways you can tell them apart are firstly that some have distinct markings or scars on their body or fins, secondly the size of the animal and thirdly every sharks gills have a different pattern. You can also tell them apart by their personalities because every shark is different, for instance Duex Rossi mostly goes for the bait or decoy from deep and comes up almost vertically and she comes with some speed too sometimes even breaking the surface getting getting her head out the water, whereas Amber on the other hand is a lot more relaxed and has a more chilled approach. She also prefers the decoy, and on her day she can give you the most amazing show.
I’m sure I can speak for all the crew here at African Shark Eco Charters when I say we have a huge passion for sharks and on our great white shark trips, we really aim to show you the natural beauty of the great whites, in their natural surroundings here in False Bay. I hope to see you on our great white shark trips.
