Sharks in the Bay

By | August 18th, 2015|Tour Happening's|

August 8th 2015 It’s been a beautiful, hot and sunny time in False Bay for the last week, with flat calm seas ensuring our African Shark Eco Charters trips’ have been very enjoyable! It’s also been fantastic that we have had one of our favourite sharks from last season ‘Propguard’ being very active around the boat. This is a shark we got to know very well last season, and it created huge excitement when she returned early last month – and looking very fat! Where-ever she has been for the last year, it’s been good for her, and since her return she’s spent many trips around our boat, Blue Pointer II, giving the guests a thrilling time with her almost 4.5m bulk appearing out of the gloom (and sometimes very speedily!!)! Now none of us can pretend that this season has been in any way similar to last year. This [...]

Don’t Get Mouthy…

By | August 16th, 2015|Tour Happening's|

Don't get mouthy When you hear the words “Megamouth Shark”, what is the image it conjures? If you think big, nay huge mouth, well then you would be correct. It stands to reason, if it has a huge mouth, it has to have a rather large frame to fit it into, and again you would be correct. This is one of the largest shark species, being out grown only by the likes of Whale Sharks and the controversial Megalodon Sharks. Despite its massive size and mouth, this shark sports very small teeth, as it is a filter feeder, swimming open mouthed through the depths swallowing jellyfish and plankton that are attracted to it by the luminescent photophore surrounding its mouth. It has fleshy “lips” and a broad rounded snout, which has confused some observers into believing that they were in fact seeing a baby killer whale. Little is known [...]

Reviews for African Shark Eco-Charters

By | October 30th, 2014|Tour Happening's|

African Shark Eco-Charters are exceptionally pleased at our great reviews, and would like to share them with you. We thank everyone who takes the time to write about their cage diving experience, and we especially enjoy reading about how much our Great Whites are loved and appreciated. We hope to see you all again in the near future, and hope you carry your experience with you wherever you may go!   “Great experience that we will never forget” Reviewed 16 October 2014 My wife and I planned our whole vacation around seeing a Great White at Seal Island and our wish came true - we saw a full breach and had a 12ft shark surface right beside the boat. Wow, what an experience! We got a couple of good pictures to remember this incredible moment. The weather was great (prior 4 days had been cancelled due to bad weather) but [...]

The Great White Shark season at African Shark Eco Charters draws to a close

By | September 25th, 2014|Tour Happening's|

End of the season Far too soon it seems my season with African Shark Eco Charters has come to an end. How the months have flown by so fast I have no idea, but what a time its been! I am so lucky to have shared it with a huge number of people from around the world on a daily basis! The guests we’ve had on board have been so much fun, all incredibly varied –different cultures, languages and ages (from 8 to 80!), but almost without exception each and everyone has gone away with a new respect (or a continued one!) for these beautiful animals. For me that is the most important part, trying to change the ‘media view’ that people have - into a much more real and understanding one. I will take such a lot with me from my time in Simon's Town, not least memories of [...]

Peak Season shark activity drops

By | August 7th, 2014|Tour Happening's|

August 1st This has been a big learning curve of a week for African Shark Eco Charters. The great white sharks in the bay seem to have dropped in huge numbers, right in the middle of the peak season. This behaviour is totally unexpected, unprecedented and unwelcome for both us and our guests. Many ideas to explain the massive change in behaviour have been batted around, but the underlying reality is that we probably will never know why. I’m told by people who have spent many years on the water in the bay, that activity in False Bay has been very strange this year. Previous seasons they could tell you almost to the day as to what the shark activity would be like, when the whales would arrive and how long they would stay, and the months to expect dolphin activity. Every single prediction, so far, has not been met. [...]

Another great Great White Shark…

By | June 12th, 2014|Tour Happening's|

10th June A bout of very bad weather, combined with boat maintenance meant the last week has been very low in terms of hours at sea. Thankfully though our trips today gave me a big dose of apex predator medicine making the world seem right again! With the whole crew itching to get out on the water, the morning’s trip started with relative ease. The sun now rises quite late at around 7.30am over the mountains behind Seal Island, (I know, I know – ‘quite late’ might make you laugh, but when you get up at 5.15am, 7.30 does seem late!) which means we are bobbing around on the ocean in the near darkness. This morning with a light, very cold wind blowing, but a calm sea, we sat around the ‘Launchpad’ with 14 pairs of eyes looking out for natural predations for us to chase. We have noticed however, [...]

“Airjaws” is back with the first breach of the season!

By | April 9th, 2014|Tour Happening's|

At African Shark Eco-Charters  the “AIRJAWS” shark breaching trip is the most popular. It is a combination trip of shark breaching and shark cage diving. The season for AIRJAWS starts in May, but we have been very lucky to have seen our first Breach of the year. Shark Breaching is one of the hunting techniques that great white sharks use to surprise and kill its prey. They breach with such force  and explosive energy that it propels the shark right out of the water.   The best time is just before and at sunrise and mainly at certain  area’s around the island and only for a few months of the year. This behaviour is absolutely awesome to witness in person, and if you are in Cape Town during shark season, then this trip is a “must do”. It is seen nowhere on the planet as regularly as  in False Bay and by  [...]

Crazy Airjaws and flying sharks show their stuff

By | April 8th, 2014|Tour Happening's|

So, to all you African Shark Eco Charters fans and Great white shark enthusiasts, it's almost that time of year again when we start to see some crazy Airjaws and flying sharks! On Monday ‎the 7th of April we started off the day with a bang... just off the southern side of Seal Island in False Bay we came across a huge pod of about a thousand Common Dolphin which was quite a treat. Its the same pod of Common Dolphin that we have been seeing over the past few weeks around Seal Island. They seem to be here in False Bay due to the large number of bait fish (Sardines) that are swimming in the warm waters. After the Common Dolphin we continued on towards Seal Island. When we arrived our skipper Rob Lawrence said that the conditions were perfect to tow our little decoy seal also known as [...]
