Great White Shark Trip With African Shark Eco-Charters – Simply Spectacular

By | December 5th, 2013|Tour Happening's|

Check out the latest review from one of our awesome guests who joined us this season. "After many hours of trying to decide on which company to go with my friend and I decided to book up for a scuba cage dive with African Shark Eco-Charters. The searching paid off as this was the best choice by far for the experience. I had been previously warned (by companies that don't use scuba) that using scuba can scare off the Great Whites and that they don't tend to come close to the cage. This is total rubbish the sharks weren't put of in the slightest with the Scuba gear and it gave you a much better view of the waters around and below and meant that you were totally submerged 100% of the time. The effort the company put in to lure the sharks in was incredible. When I looked out at other [...]

Different Breaching Techniques Used By Great White Sharks

By | October 31st, 2013|Tour Happening's|

Following our previous blog post on the anti-predatory strategies of the Cape Fur Seals at Seal Island, here is a post which focuses on the different breaching techniques used by Great White Sharks when hunting for prey. Over millions of years, Great White Sharks have adapted their hunting techniques to include breaching as an effective means to hunt certain species of prey. Seal Island in  False Bay, South Africa is home to the "flying" Great White Sharks, and offers the unique opportunity to witness the highest number of natural predatory events between Great White Sharks and Cape Fur Seals in the world. Great White Sharks rely on stealth, camouflage and speed when hunting, and the breaching technique is most effective as it provides the Great White Sharks with an element of surprise as they explode from the water with explosive speed to capture their prey. A massive "Polaris" breach in pursuit of the [...]

Anti-predatory Strategies of Cape Fur Seals

By | October 29th, 2013|Tour Happening's|

Natural predation by Great White Sharks on Cape Fur Seals   Anti-predatory strategies of Cape Fur Seals are often observed at Seal Island in False Bay, South Africa. Seal Island provides unique opportunities to observe natural predation by Great White Sharks on Cape Fur Seals, and to observe social interactions among both species. Cape Fur Seals are constantly aware of the imminent threat of Great White Sharks in the area, which is heightened during the winter months (June - August), when the predation of Great White Sharks on Cape Fur Seals is most intense. Cape Fur Seals have their own unique techniques to detect, avoid, outmaneuver and sometimes injure the Great White Shark in order to survive. These anti-predatory strategies of Cape Fur Seals primarily rely on vigilance and agility to outsmart their attacker. Great Whites often sport numerous scratches on their heads, most likely caused by seals defending themselves [...]

Shark Diving “Everything Was Incredibly Awesome!”

By | June 4th, 2013|Tour Happening's|

Shark Diving - “Everything Was Incredibly Awesome!” "We were fortunate to book a shark diving trip with Rob Lawrence and his crew on May 20, 2013. The whole process from my initial contact to paying the bill was great especially our time on the water. We arrived at the appointed time and boarded with our party of 7. We bought the whole boat and were very glad we did. We started our day by Seal Island trolling with a seal decoy behind the boat. We had an Air Jaws attack and the shark completely cleared the water. RIDICULOUSLY COOL! We also had 4 different shark visitors and everyone shark diving in the cage got to see a shark with one pair getting a very close view of a 14 footer. We also saw 3 shark attacks on seals. Obviously, we had a spectacular day with Rob and crew. The entire [...]

Great White Shark breaching – “Great trip, can’t wait to go back!”

By | December 31st, 2012|Tour Happening's|

“Great trip, can't wait to go back!” "We went in May and had a couple of reschedules due to weather. Make sure you plan your trip put there early on your vacation so that you have time to reschedule if needs be. Rob and crew were amazing and very accommodating. We got into the sharks in about 45 minutes and had them around for about 20-30 min. Water was a little cold, but not too bad. On the way back saw lots of dolphins and a whale. Oh yeah, if the smell of seal crap bothers you, you might want to bring nose plugs. Overall the trip was amazing, just saving up to go back." http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g319718-d1887135-r148182787-African_Shark_Eco_Charters-Simon_s_Town_Western_Cape.html#REVIEWS Breaching Great White Shark clears the air at Seal Island, False Bay Join us on one of our “Airjaws” shark breaching trips to witness this spectacular breaching behaviour of the Great White [...]

Great White Shark breaching – beyond my wildest dreams

By | December 24th, 2012|Tour Happening's|

“Beyond my Wildest Dreams” We went out with ASEC for an AIRJAWS dive in mid-June and it was absolutely the highlight of our 3 week trip in South Africa. Captain Rob and his crew are passionate, enthusiastic and highly knowledgeable about the Great Whites and they will do everything in their powers to ensure the best possible experience for your dive trip. Weather can be a problem in False Bay and cause trip cancelations, so I would suggest scheduling your dive trip early on in your stay so if necessary, you could go another day. Two days before our scheduled trip I got an email letting us know the conditions were not looking good for our trip and ASEC would know for sure the following day. The next day I got a call from Tamsyn who works in the office and our trip was in fact canceled. She went over [...]
