Great White Shark Predation’s “all round”

By | July 3rd, 2014|Tour Happening's|

Great White Shark Predation's all round   So, on Sunday ‎the 29th of June, myself and the rest of the crew here at African Shark Eco Charters set out to Seal Island here in False Bay South Africa to find ourselves some Great White Sharks. We got out to the Island around 7:20am and as we arrived we were greeted with an amazing natural predation. Birds where flying everywhere hoping to get some scraps and lucky for them they managed to get some. The predation went on for ages with the Cape Fur Seal jumping franticly, trying to evade the Great white sharks snapping Jaws. That wasn't the only natural predation of the day, this went on for just over a hour. We managed to see roughly 16 predations throughout the morning, and I'm pretty sure we missed a few while focusing on others. We anchored up arou‎nd 8:45am and [...]

Our new shark cage

By | June 25th, 2014|Tour Happening's|

Our new shark cage We at African Shark Eco-Charters have been dodging a lot of bad weather recently, which in high season has been especially hard on the girls in the office. Sadly we have had to say goodbye to a fantastic employee and friend, in the form of Tamsyn who has been working at African Shark Eco-Charters for 4 years. She has an exciting time ahead as she is leaving us to go to China, but we will all be very sad to see her go. However, we wish her the best of luck and I especially thank her for all the help (and laughs!) she has given me this season!  But that does mean we have welcomed a new face into the team -Roxanne who will be on hand to help with any enquiries, bookings or information! Together in this change over period they have done a sterling [...]

Another great Great White Shark…

By | June 12th, 2014|Tour Happening's|

10th June A bout of very bad weather, combined with boat maintenance meant the last week has been very low in terms of hours at sea. Thankfully though our trips today gave me a big dose of apex predator medicine making the world seem right again! With the whole crew itching to get out on the water, the morning’s trip started with relative ease. The sun now rises quite late at around 7.30am over the mountains behind Seal Island, (I know, I know – ‘quite late’ might make you laugh, but when you get up at 5.15am, 7.30 does seem late!) which means we are bobbing around on the ocean in the near darkness. This morning with a light, very cold wind blowing, but a calm sea, we sat around the ‘Launchpad’ with 14 pairs of eyes looking out for natural predations for us to chase. We have noticed however, [...]

The trip I almost got kissed by a great white shark.

By | June 4th, 2014|Tour Happening's|

Monday 26th May. The trip I almost got kissed by a great white shark. Ok, ok that ‘might’ be a small exaggeration and sensationalised slightly... but who wouldn’t? I will remember the moment forever!!! The start of a brand new week, Monday morning and our African Shark Eco Charters trip arrives at Seal Island for the first time in over two days (bad weather). A great group of customers have joined us, all raring to go and excited to see their first ever great white shark. A few divers on board, but none have seen a great white before. All of the three shark companies that operate out of Simonstown moored up together at the Launchpad and started trying to attract sharks.  This involves using bait, decoy, splashing and generally making a lot of noise. For the first half an hour or so there were a few sharks in the [...]

Another Amazing Shark Cage Diving Blog from the Boat

By | May 20th, 2014|Tour Happening's|

Shark Cage Diving Blog After a long week and a bit, of amazing weather the wind has finally come to the party causing us at African Shark Eco-Charters  to miss a day or two. The sharks have still been crazy though. There have two sharks that just love to play around the boat, one being Sat-tag and the other being Zamalek (or as Kim calls it 'Sharknado'). We've managed to get to know these two great white sharks over the past few weeks and that's how we came to giving them names. How did we choose their names you ask? Well Sat-tag was a pretty straight forward call since when she first came to Seal Island in False Bay she had an Ocean Research satellite tag bolted onto her dorsal fin. Then one day she appeared by our boat and it was gone... I personally was rather happy it was [...]

Crazy Airjaws and flying sharks show their stuff

By | April 8th, 2014|Tour Happening's|

So, to all you African Shark Eco Charters fans and Great white shark enthusiasts, it's almost that time of year again when we start to see some crazy Airjaws and flying sharks! On Monday ‎the 7th of April we started off the day with a bang... just off the southern side of Seal Island in False Bay we came across a huge pod of about a thousand Common Dolphin which was quite a treat. Its the same pod of Common Dolphin that we have been seeing over the past few weeks around Seal Island. They seem to be here in False Bay due to the large number of bait fish (Sardines) that are swimming in the warm waters. After the Common Dolphin we continued on towards Seal Island. When we arrived our skipper Rob Lawrence said that the conditions were perfect to tow our little decoy seal also known as [...]

Shark Cage Diving – Breathtaking, but not scary!

By | February 19th, 2014|Tour Happening's|

Shark cage diving with African Shark Eco-Charters   Shark cage diving with African Shark Eco-Charters - “Breathtaking, but not scary!” Reviewed 17 February 2014 "An unforgettable experience. From start to end, the trip was amazing. The office staff was incredibly helpful in communicating frequently about our trip (weather was touch-and-go, so the decision to green-light the trip was made the previous day) and responding to 7pm text messages asking for directions to the pier. The dive itself was spectacular. It is an early start, but not bad if you're in Cape Town, and the trip out to Seal Island takes only 30 minutes. From there you do a quick loop around the island, then set up in an optimal position for shark viewing. You start by viewing the sharks from the surface while the crew works bait and a seal decoy to get sharks closer to the cage. [...]

Shark Cage Diving Trip Report – 29 January 2014

By | January 29th, 2014|Tour Happening's|

Shark cage diving with African Shark Eco-Charters African Shark Eco-Charters is pleased to announce that the 2014 Great White Shark season has officially opened in False Bay, and we ran our first official shark cage diving trip of the season today. Even though we had good shark activity on our "test run" out to Seal Island last week Thursday, we were still not too sure what to expect for out trip today as it is still so early in the season, but we were extremely hopeful. We had a small group of guests on board with us this morning and even though they were aware that sightings could not be guaranteed, they were all willing to give it a go and were hoping to get a glimpse of our ocean's most feared, yet misunderstood predator. But it all worked out very well in the end and our clients left us feeling very ecstatic [...]
